Start with the protected equipment and credible relief scenario. Confirm the medium and phase, operating pressure, set pressure, relieving temperature, required capacity, superimposed and built-up back pressure, inlet loss, outlet routing, materials, adopted code and required inspection documents. A model should only be selected after these inputs are defined.

Selection, Sizing and Valve Type

Use the safety valve selection guide to organize the required data. Then review API 520 sizing principles, certified capacity versus connection size, and the comparison of spring-loaded and pilot-operated valves.

For discharge systems, use the back pressure and bellows engineering guide. It explains why a bellows is not a substitute for checking total back pressure, capacity correction, stability, blowdown and bellows limits.

Installation, Maintenance and Failure Review

Installation and maintenance decisions affect whether the selected valve can perform as intended. Standards establish the calculation, construction and test framework, but project compliance depends on the adopted edition, jurisdiction, certified scope and supplied documents. Review the standards center, certificate and test-report resources, and the procurement checklist before issuing an RFQ.
